Our plan is to drive down the Stewart - Cassiar Highway (aka "The Cassiar") rather than take the Alaska Highway (aka "The ALCAN") all the way to Dawson Creek. From Whitehorse, it's about 260 miles just to get to the Cassiar, so today's trip was about covering most of that distance.
However, we're going to by-pass the Cassiar and go to Watson Lake to the "Signpost Forest" (another dozen miles) and then we're going to go on to Liard River Hot Springs Provincial Park (another 130 miles) before backtracking to the Cassiar.
Today, we had our continuing lovely weather as we drove through the Yukon. The scenery was beautiful and the road was quite good all the way to our destination - mountains, rivers, lakes, and Fall colors.
Eventually, after about 250 miles of driving, we stopped at the Big Creek Government Campground, another wonderful little Yukon public campground.
This one has 15 sites (no hook-ups), and is again $12 CAD ($9 USD) and includes picnic tables, firepits, vault toilets, and free firewood. Most of the sites were unoccupied when we arrived early in the afternoon, and we quickly snagged Site 3, easily the best campsite in the campground.
While a few of the sites are just pull-offs, this is a large pull-through site that sits on the bluff right by the creek.
There was already firewood by our firepit, .....
but I fetched and chopped quite a bit more.
That was pretty much the extent of our afternoon and evening - sitting by the campfire listening to the creek flow by.
I took a short video.
These little Yukon campgrounds make me want to consider a summer just exploring all of them .... perhaps throwing in some of the free British Columbia recreation sites as well.
Tomorrow, we'll continue east. We debated about whether or not to park the RV in Watson Lake and just do a day-trip to Liard Hot Springs, but we've decided to go ahead and take the rig to Liard since pretty much everyone that drives the Alaska Highway says the hot springs are a "must do". We'll see if we agree.
Going down The Cassiar a short side trip over to Stewart, BC & Hyder, AK is well worth the time. Several movies have been made in and around the area plus many other interesting things we found that were worth the time.
Been to all three of the hot springs....we loved all three but Liard seemed the best for us. Met very interesting people.
Long time follower of your blog...actually since you started.

Love following your blog. We were long time RVers. Now we bought a second home in the mountains of NC so we had to sell the MH. Coincidentally our names are Howard and Linda too. Keep entertaining us with your wonderful adventures.

We love that campground and always try to get 3. We too like Liard the best of the three. Hope the upper pool is open.

If you do make it to Stewart and Hyder check out the Salmon Glacier. It’s absolutely stunning.
Safe travels!
