After my morning hikes in Denali National Park, we headed out a day early and continued moving north. The plan for the rest of this month is to visit our Alaskan friends Rowdy & Missy up near Chena Hot Springs northeast of Fairbanks for a few days and then begin our return trip back to the Lower 48.
Tonight, we decided to stay in Fairbanks to stock up on food supplies, plug in for a night, dump tanks, and take on water.
After checking campgrounds and RV parks, it seems the camping is somewhat limited and reviews were all over the place.
In the end, rather than going to the $60/night Rivers Edge Resort RV Park, we opted for the $30/night campground at the Tanana Valley Fairgrounds. The 2018 reviews for the campground were terrible, but new management in 2019 seems to have made a difference.
After an easy drive to Fairbanks, we pulled into the campground. I spoke with Dusty in the tiny cabin/office (watch your head when you enter the very short door), and she said they had several electric sites available. We chose Site 8 and made our way around the pot-holed (go very slowly) loop where Linda backed in.
It's not anything fancy, but the sites have 30-amp electric, a firepit, a picnic table, and individual trash cans. There is a coin laundry on-site as well as a dump station and potable water fill-up.
And it was a short drive to a great choice of groceries - Walmart Supercenter, Costco, Fred Meyer, and Safeway.
Linda went out and stocked up while I used the solid Verizon 4G signal to upload photos from Denali.
Contrary to prior reviews, the campground was clean, it looked like the bathhouse/laundry had been recently painted, and it was certainly an acceptable place to stay for a night .... or longer.
Tomorrow, we'll head out to Rowdy & Missy's place about 60 miles away in the Chena River wilderness.
