It was interesting getting your perspective of this area. We used to watch a show called Edge of Alaska which pitted some towns people against each other. Some were for improving the area for tourism and others wanted nothing to do with the outside world. Safe travels!

Howard, what is your opinion on driving our Ford dually down that road. It's definitely in our plan next year for a visit, but our group will only have larger trucks like our F-350. For planning purposes, trying to decide driving ourselves or hiring a local conveyance. Thanks for all your updates!

For a day trip, I wouldn't want to take an F-350 in 60 miles and back out 60 miles in the same day. Figure about 5 hours of driving time just on the McCarthy Road. The trucks can certainly do it, but I wouldn't recommend it.

If you are going with a group, I'd think it would be more fun to have someone else do the driving. And if you have enough people, you may be able to charter the shuttle just for your group. See Kennicott Shuttle - https://www.kennicottshuttle.com/wrangell.html

Thanks, Howard. We are planning on staying overnight in McCarthy. We want to do the Root Glacier hike now that we see what a great time you had, and we also want to do the Kennicott tour. We are "museum type" people, more so than y'all, so if you thought it was great, it must be awesome! I don't think one day will be enough to do both.
