It is hard to express my deep appreciation of your allowing the world to follow you to Alaska. Thank you for your extensive comments and photos. It brings back fond memories of our Alaskan trip in our fifth wheel. Happy trails!!!

Your trip looks amazing. I love reading each entry!

Howard, I was wondering in a previous entry, and then again with this one....are you carrying bear spray?

In Glacier, Yellowstone, the Tetons, they seems to HIGHLY encourage it, but I was wondering how you felt (or maybe I'm just a huge scaredy-cat).

I just don't like to carry bear spray, but I'm in the minority. Apparently it is effective when used properly, but the odds of having to use it are so small, I just don't feel the need to carry it.

Linda will carry it and our friends that are with us will carry it, but I don't. Alaskans carry guns, air horns, or bear spray when in the wilderness, especially in the evening.

But again, the odds of having a bear encounter are very small, and the odds of having an aggressive bear encounter are even smaller, so I just choose to rely on bear awareness, knowledge of animal behavior, and the tiny risk that such protective measures would be needed. If I'm wrong and a bear eats me, well that's better than dying in a nursing home later. :)

You are not a scaredy-cat as you say it is highly recommended, and most people will take some protective measures. So just do what you feel comfortable with.

Thanks for the bear spray question and answer as I also was wondering.

I'm also wondering about carrying cash, what is the availability of "cash back" stores while traveling. Not looking for you to share any amounts, just curious. As Alaska is more remote with no Walmarts in each city for cash back opportunities....just trying to plan ahead.

Sitka looks amazing!

I agree I'd rather die at the paws of a bear than in a nursing home.
