I'm sure you are already aware of the long and somewhat steep grades on SR-190 going to Death Valley. I suggest you unhook the jeep at Father Crowley Overlook and drive both vehicles down to Panamint Springs. I also suggest you start down the steep incline by manually selecting 3rd gear and if need be downshifting to 2nd gear and just coast down the hill. In 2nd gear you probably won't have to use the brakes very often. From Panamint Springs you still have a good climb and drop into the NP, but it is not so bad that you can't tow the jeep.

Several years ago we had a pretty good Verizon cell signal at Turtle Creek CG. However boondocking in Alabama Hills, north of Whitney Portal Rd we lost the cell signal.
You may be able to boondock at 36.581464, -118.117660 and have a cell signal.

Al & Sharon,
Thanks for the tip on CA 190. We were going to go the long way around and avoid this, but after talking with other folks with larger rigs than ours, they said it was doable if you are careful. And they also recommended unhitching the Jeep to "reduce the pucker factor". :)
