Always interested in others budgets. Like us, some months under, others not so much.

Just as a note here on the OmniLynx:
We are residence of Huntsville and we have one of their Mifi's. Our students have gone to computers exclusively (no textbooks). Their textbooks are on servers - not on their computers. This service was set up for students and residences of Huntsville. a number of our students don't have home internet and this service was brought to our school system to assist these students.
We have home internet but with busy schedules - ball games, practices that take us away from home - we are paying for this in addition to our home internet. We have been bumped from time to time and the MiFi doesn't have the greatest range.
I understand wanting to get the cheapest service but PLEASE understand why this service was originally set up. They also have patented the idea.

Hi Ann,
It's clear to me why they set up this arrangement, but if there are major concerns, then they shouldn't have opened it up to the public. Like I said, I don't think they know what they are getting into and I don't think it will last long. It certainly can't be a fundraiser, because they can't make enough money under the current terms.

The MiFI "range" depends completely on the towers and signals in the areas where it is being used, so your experience really is no indication of what others will experience across the country.

As for patenting the idea, an "idea" can't be patented and this has been done before. It seems to be quite an odd thing for a school system to do (opening it up to the public).

Thanks for your perspective. :)

Howard, thanks for the info on OmniLynx. We have ordered the service as a supplement to our AT&T Mifi service. We plan to lower the data subscription on AT&T and try this for a while. If it works - great! If not, we haven't lost anything for trying and we can adjust our AT&T plan as needed.

When I signed up on their website, it was the OmniLynx website, which appears to be a national website. Also, they bill through PayPal, and the billing address was San Jose, CA. I received email confirmation showing payment to Huntsville City Schools. It appears there is an agreement in place between Huntsville City Schools and OmniLynx, but Doesn't appear to be an exclusive agreement. Our use should in no way create problems for Huntsville City Schools, since OmniLynx is actually the provider. We may be helping by increasing their participation and providing better rates.

OmniLynx has has rescinded their offer. I got this email today.
"Dear OmniLynx Customer,

The wireless provider previously servicing the OmniLynx Program has recently expressed an inability or unwillingness to continue supporting the program. As a result ,and regrettably, we will be unable to accommodate your recent order. Within the next 48 hours, you should receive a full refund of your initial payment. This refund will be transacted through the PayPal portal. We are exploring alternatives for the continuation of the OmniLynx Program and will notify you immediately upon resolution to this issue. Thank you for your patience, support, and understanding in this matter.

So there ya go. Too good to be true.
Demand is there. Providers don't care.
