Howard, another book I enjoyed on PCT is Wild by Cheryl Strayed. It was an Oprah selection. Cheryl hiked 1000 miles and had never hiked before. It is very interesting. A true story. I reread it after we got into hiking. It had a whole different meaning to me. Her adventure is quite remarkable. You can probably also watch the video segments that Oprah interviewing her.

Yep, I've read "Wild" - good read. And I've read a few others. I like one by Bill Walker - "Skywalker" about his trip on the Appalachian Trail, and I just downloaded his book on the Pacific Crest Trail. :)

Backpacking has changed so much over the years. Not even going ultra lightweight I can get my pack with 5 days of food under 30 lbs, in the good old days it was 60 plus!

Technology has changed the hiking too. Many Thursday hikers now blog on the trail, there is data connection on top of Mt Whitney on the PCT, amazing.

Plenty of sections to do on any of the big 3, and then there is always the Hayduke Trail. But it's rugged, have you read the "Monkey Wrench Gang" by Edward Abbey?

Have you read A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson? Very funny book with an Englishmans perspective.

There are books on ultralite hiking that may interest you.
