Howard,
Try a pair of channel locks, pipe wrench or even a screw driver(drive it through the filter) to get that problem filter removed. It does not matter if you damage it because you are throwing it away. If you have to use a screw driver it is a little messy. Good luck.

He uses a cup type filter wrench. Take your filter back to napa to find a cup that fits. Should be under 10 bucks. It attaches to a standard 3/8" socket wrench. YMMV

Onan sure does tuck the oil filter up in the 5500 series generator. I had that model genny on my previous MH and found that Onan sells a special oil filter "wrench" for it. It is like a cup that "cups" over the filter end and on the inside it is shaped to grip the filter. On the other end is a square hole that you can put a 3/8" rachet into to "screw" the filter off.

I have found the same cup filter wrench Pep Boys, too, for lots cheaper than Onan wants. Take a new filter with you to select the right one, they come in several sizes.

It is the best tool for removing those pesky filters. Remember, when installing the new filter, make sure the gasket is lubed with a little oil and put it on hand tight and then just a tad more with the filter wrench b/c it is so hard to get a good hand grip on the filter. If you over tighten it, you'll have real fun at the next oil change. :cO

Howard, it's too bad you're not close to Jacksonville, FL - you could borrow the wrench you need to get that oil filter off. It's basically a big socket that fits over the end of the filter. You might be able to get one at NAPA when you get the filter. I got mine at the local Onan dealer when I bought a filter.

Wow, you have come a long way ! The screwdriver method is effective, but messy ! Although not fun, the know how will serve you well to check that service techs have done the work properly in the future. While you are at it, or on the next service , if your Onan has a fuel filter, it should be changed out.
Now you have a new topic for seminars.
Best wishes.
