Another good thing about GA State Parks is you can join Friends of the Parks. We buy the senior package for $50.00. We get 2 nights free camping, 10% off purchases and camping, 2 annual park passes(park pass is $5.00) and 2 passes for a train ride. We also get our senior 10% discount. So we pay for the package with 2 nights free in a state park. Then we only pay $18 a night for camping after that and we get into parks free the rest of the year. Even if you are just passing through Georgia and plan to stay in state parks more than 2 nights it is a good value.

Hope you all have a safe trip and we will see you down the road

Beware of the Georgia State Park Volunteer system. We spent 4 months Nov 09-Feb 10 at one of Georgia's state parks. There is no management in many of the parks because of budget shortfalls. We were told that we would be campground hosts and ended up cleaning 3 public bathrooms outside the campground 7 days a week, sometimes twice a day. No one at this particular park managed the volunteers and we understand from talking to other volunteers at other Georgia parks the same occurs. The park we were at was very nice and we had a nice site. However, the experience has soured us on volunteering. You wouldn't believe what kind of messes we found in those bathrooms.

Isn't that what your full time life is supposed to be all about? Just laid back, relaxed with no "type A" activity? Sounds like a great place to spend the winter in spite of the weather. Someone once said "A bad day anywhere is better than a good day at work.". Travel safe.

Hi Howard and Linda,

I wasn't able to get down there as I had hoped (have been looking at retirement homes in Coquina Crossing in Elkton, not too far from St. Augustine or where you have been).

My mother-in-law passed on March 9, so that coupled with Robyn's passing has reinforced this as a sad time for me. The RV dreams are gone. But if you are staying anywhere near the Columbus GA area (FDR State Park would be nice), I would love to come and shake your hand and thank you for the inspiration you and Linda have given all the rest of us to follow our dreams...

Thanks for the great information on volunteering in the Georgia State Parks. We did not know you could see their openings online!

Love Georgia State Park system... It is easy for sure! As for that sleepy little town of Welaka it is a wonderful place! Been there a couple of times and really enjoyed it!!! Have fun & travel safe...

Hi Howard and Linda,

The other nice thing about Georgia State Parks is they provide a washer and dryer to campers for ( I think I remember) 50 cents to wash and 25 cents per dryer load depending on how humid it was or how thick your clothes are, lol...in 2008 we spent a couple of weeks in 3 different GA parks and had a great time...hope you have a great experience as well.
