The Friday morning golf on this day was a scramble format as opposed to the usual regular round of golf. I had checked the posted foursomes and schedules last night and found that I was playing at 8:31 am.
By the time I checked emails and finished the Journal entry, I was running tight on time but there was no panic like there might have been in that other life. :) I made it with lots of time to spare.
Supposedly each person was going to be randomly grouped with three other golfers. But it didn't turn out that way. I played with two guys, Stan & Gene, that I had played with before and our fourth, Fred, was a spry 80 year old who rode with me in the golf cart.
Since it was a scramble (I had no idea what the prize was for winning), smart play was not the order of the day for me. The other guys would put the ball in play, and they had me going for the green on all par 4s. It's such a short course at Bonita Fairways that I could reach every par 4 from the tee if I hit a good shot.
I played much better today. I hit the flag stick on one hop on the second hole, a little par 3. I drove the ball onto the back of the green (while the group in front of us was still putting - oops) with a 3-wood on the par 4 third hole. My guys were supposed to watch the ball and yell if I caught it good. I caught it good, but they were silent so I assumed I didn't kill anyone.
The guys wanted me to go for the green on the 260 yard par 4 sixth hole (with about a 210 yard carry over a lake and lots of houses on both sides). "Should I wait for the group to get off the green?" Of course they said "Nah, let if fly - we'll yell if ya hit it good. "Like last time, huh?" So I tried it. "Foooooooore!!!" As soon as it left the club I knew I hit it good and I started yelling to the group on the green putting. Fortunately, it bounced a little in front of the green and rolled on just to the right of them.
We played well as a team and came in at nine under par. I have no idea if we won or not. At most scrambles I have played on tougher courses, it wouldn't have been good enough, but it was probably pretty close for this group. But it didn't really matter.
We had fun and it was a pleasure getting to know Fred who has been RVing for years. Fred & his wife are not full-timers, but he said he "has done laundry in every state at least twice." :) He has been on nine caravan tours - mostly with Tracks To Adventure - including a 60 day tour to Alaska. He has had his motorhome on a train in Mexico and a few ferries here and there. They still drive their rig from Connecticut to Florida and back each winter. They have a reunion every year with the people they met and befriended on the Alaska trip - about 20 core folks.
After the round, the four of us exchanged handshakes and enjoyed a beverage together. I gave them cards to keep in touch and gave Fred a ride back to the RV park.
Back home, Linda was reading a beading magazine. Since her show is Saturday morning in Fort Myers, we decided to drive up this afternoon and spend the night at her Mom's condo so she wouldn't be freaking out about getting up too early or getting stuck in traffic. :)
Once again, we loaded up the truck and it looked like we were staying somewhere for a week. I turned all the water off - I don't know if other people do that when they leave their rig for a day or more, but it sure seems like a good precaution. We gave our cell phone number to the neighbors and headed out.
Ugh! The traffic. And it wasn't even close to rush hour. And they just keep building more strip malls and more communities here. The good thing for us is that we are not in any hurry, so we just talk and listen to music, and keep an eye out for idiots - they are certainly not an endangered species. :)
Once at the condo, Linda worked on more bracelets. She is getting pretty fast now. When she first learned, it took her about five hours to do one. Now she can get one done in about an hour and forty-five minutes - as long as she doesn't make a mistake. I have seen her undo almost a whole bracelet and re-stitch it if she finds the tiniest of flaws. She won't let anything go, so folks can be sure the craftsmanship of the bracelet is tight. :)
Anyway, productivity on the line is up and that's good for profitability. :) Oh wait, if we count her time, it's not profitable anyway, so I guess it doesn't matter. :)
However, on a purely cash basis, we are expecting to be out of the hole on crafts after tomorrow. Well, at least until we have to buy the next thing that makes the process easier or a new shipment of supplies is needed. :)
But hey, as she is quick to remind me, at least she is recouping the cost of her entertainment - my golf is just a bottomless pit. Maybe I'd better get that sign painted - "Golf Lessons In Exchange For Greens Fees." :)
I sat on my rump and watched golf and basketball until I fell asleep after Adam's wonderful swiss steak dinner. I didn't even make it to the end of the early basketball games. Linda watched an overtime without me and didn't even flip the channel - that's progress boys. :) Granted, it has taken twenty years for her to watch five minutes of a sporting event she was not forced to watch, but it's something. :)
Off to bed. Wish Linda luck on the craft show! She has my golf to pay for. Wink. :)
P.S. Thanks again to all that commented on the new journal format the last two days. I am pretty sure that we are going to make the change. We will let you know when that will happen. I will do the journal entries on both formats for a little while until I am positive we are making the change. This site will remain available until August or until I can all the entries copied to the new site. Thanks for your input and patience. :)
