After we checked the weather and noted rain for a few days, we decided to just go ahead and stay put here at Clear Springs COE Campground on Wright-Patman Lake in Texas.
After our first day here on Monday, the weather turned cold and gray and wet for a couple of days, and then it changed to warm, gray, and less wet for the last three days.
It's given us time to change plans. Now, rather than making a beeline across Texas and going around Dallas, we're going to go south at a slower pace and spend some time with friends through Thanksgiving before making our way through Texas and New Mexico and into Arizona by the first of the year.
And during our time here, we've been watching flocks of American White Pelicans arrive as they migrate south. White Pelicans are huge birds, one of the largest flying birds in North America, and they are beautiful in flight. We've had the opportunity to get pretty close to them in on a lake in Iowa and in south Texas several years ago.
We saw a few on Monday, then this flock was out in the middle of the lake on Tuesday.
Then we saw more come in on Wednesday and Thursday, and then they got closer on Friday morning.
They are known to congregate with Double-crested Cormorants, but we had never seen that to the extent we are seeing it here.
They forage differently, but they seem to help each other with fishing. The cormorants dive and push the fish toward the surface while the pelicans are masters at corralling fish with precision.
Unfortunately, the didn't stay near the shore on our side long and soon moved across the lake as more and more birds flew in. Here's my video of the increasing numbers.
It's been quite interesting to watch.
Other than that, there hasn't been much going on.
Linda's oven wasn't staying lit, but after watching some videos and referring back to the blog post where we replaced our burner assembly back in 2012, she decided to try to clean the burner assembly and thermocouple to see if that improved the gas flow to give us the blue flame we were supposed to have. Sure enough, that worked. She is definitely our "handyman". In hindsight, that's all that may have been required back in 2012 - oh well.
That's it for now. We have visitors coming on Saturday and we're trying to figure out our next stop. And I have another couple of posts coming that you may or may not find interesting. :)
