If you need a stop north of Dallas, I highly recommend Hickory Creek COE. Construction along highway 35 may be an issue, but the COE Park is great. And if you want to visit Dallas, mass transit (light rail) is available.

Our pleasure.

The three weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas is one of the best times to visit Big Bend. The fewest visitors of the winter season and weather is usually great. Schools let out for Xmas break on 12/23 so plan on leaving by that weekend.
For real time weather for the headquarters at Panther Junction: http://mesowest.utah.edu/cgi-bin/droman/meso_base_dyn.cgi?stn=PJNT2
For RGV: http://mesowest.utah.edu/cgi-bin/droman/meso_base_dyn.cgi?stn=TS645
To see up to the last 30 days of weather history in the above links, click on "Change to Graphical Display" in the left hand bar of the websites. BBNP also has a "daily report": https://www.nps.gov/bibe/daily_report.htm
In BBNP you can truly boondock on the backcountry roads. More info: https://www.nps.gov/bibe/planyourvisit/roadsidecamps.htm
You can get your 5th wheel into the following backcountry sites. Grapevine Hills #1, Hannold Draw, KBar #2 and Paint Gap #1. There is a dip in the road beyond PG#1 that your rig probably cannot get though. 9 point draw is an option as well, but it is a 30minute minimum drive from there to anywhere in the park. Croton Springs is an option, but if it rains the 3/4 mile entrance road can get slippery in the mud. Other than that there is the RGV NP CG. There is a no generator section. I highly recommend the Primitive CG's. All the primitive CG's are first come first serve registration at the visitor centers the day before or the day of your stay. You can stay up to 14 days consecutively for $12. More info: https://www.nps.gov/bibe/planyourvisit/bc_usepermits.htm
A trick to getting the campsites you want is if, for example Kbar is not open until 2 days from now, but 9 Point is, you can register for 9 Point for 2 nights and ALSO register for KBar starting when it opens in 2 days, then move to Kbar in 2 days for the rest of your stay.
We have been going to BB since 1969, mostly primitive road camping in vehicles. Here is a blog of a recent trip: http://travelswithhomer1.blogspot.com/2014/02/february-2014-two-week-trip-to-big-bend.html

Al & Sharon,
That is fantastic information! Thank you very much. You may have persuaded us to swing down that way. :)
