Hello September - looking forward to this month in Maine. :)
The very first day we went out on the "Point" with Seth, it was really windy, and we were thinking about what it would be like with that kind of wind in 20-degree cooler weather and maybe some rain thrown in. But so far, knock on wood, our counting days have been pretty calm. Yesterday was a bit breezy, but this morning there was almost no wind. It was beautiful.
I took a shot of Cadillac Mountain before the sun escaped the morning clouds and before we got set up for the morning counting session.
It was a slow day for migrating birds. Visibility was awesome and we could see for miles, but there just weren't many migrants. There was almost no wind, so that certainly wasn't hindering flight.
We had our usual Harbor Porpoises, but it was a long morning. Still, it was so pretty that we stuck around after we finished counting, and I took more photos.
The Herring Gulls are with us every morning, ....
as are the Common Eiders, large sea ducks (the largest in the Northern Hemisphere).
They have a distinctive sloped head ....
and are quite comfortable in rough water.
During breeding season, the males are white and black and easy to pick out, but they won't be in full color until October or perhaps after we are gone.
The lighting was outstanding, and I kept snapping photos of the sea pounding on the rocks with Cadillac Mountain in the background.
Here's a video as well. For the full size, click here: Schoodic Point Waves On Rocks Video.
Here are a couple more pics from up near the tree line.
Eventually, we headed back to the rig, and headed out for our run. We met Ed and chatted with him for a few minutes. Ed and his wife, Caroline, are a young couple that are here doing "bird banding" in two locations on the peninsula. One of these days, we'll stop by and get some photos of their process and some of the birds.
In our afternoon session, it was still slow as far as birds to count. But it was another lovely day, and our views are tough to beat.
Back home, Linda had made us a crockpot chicken dish for dinner, and we relaxed and watched a little TV until our early bedtime. Tomorrow, we get up early and do it all over again. :)
