It was a chilly but sunny morning.

It was a perfect day to do some mouse-proofing of the rig. We've had mice here before, and that has been one of our biggest concerns about leaving the fifth wheel parked on this farm while we are in Africa for a month. This isn't a citified storage lot. It's a real, working horse farm with campsites backing up to woods so, with the chilling air which comes with autumn, small furry critters will be looking for something cozy.
Now, it just so happens that Linda ran into a guy with an RV mouse-proofing product called Mouse Free. And, through our friend, Gary Bunzer - the RV Doctor, we've arranged to be a test case for Mouse Free.

The product is infused with a menthol smell that rodents apparently don't like. It looks like petroleum jelly in a slightly more liquid-y state.

So, we filled up the spray can and I connected it to our air compressor hose.

Then we raised the rig as far up as it would go, I put on my knee pads, crawled under, and started applying the gel to the undercarriage. It didn't go on quite as easily as the video on the website showed, but it wasn't too bad.

I threw on a life jacket to cushion me from the gravel. The video didn't show the "lying on the back" application method. :)

That certainly wasn't much fun, but at least it smelled nice. Linda said the aroma was like a nice peppermint candle - but it was the most uncomfortable aroma therapy I've been a part of. :)
Along with the Mouse Free coating, I stuffed steel wool into various mouse-inviting holes. I have no idea if any of this will work, but we'll be one pretty good test case, and we were pretty sure we had to try something. It'll give us a little more peace of mind.
After that project, we concentrated on packing and figuring out what was going to go where in our limited luggage plan.
That may take another day or so. :)
Tomorrow, we've got a couple of errands to run and several phone calls to make. We'll discontinue a few monthly services and put our debit card company on notice that there will be foreign charges so they can put a note in our records.

I'll be interested in hearing how the mouse proofing works!
Have fun on your trip!

We should have used this stuff while traveling through Colorado.
We were boondocking in Gunnison National Forest in Beginning of July and kept hearing noises all night the 2nd night. Lauree thought it was a bear outside. NOT.
The next morning we saw evidence of a small visitor. How he got in no idea.
Next evening and a mouse trap, No more Bear Noises or mouse evidence.
Enjoy following your blog.
Will be reading about your trip to Africa I hope.

I'm looking forward to an honest evaluation of this product. We all have to keep our eyes open for critters, and although this product seems pricey and a bit difficult to apply I may consider it. How often does it need to be applied?
